Baccarat compares two hands called Player and Banker. The bettor normally chooses which hand will finish with the stronger total, or bets on a tie. Card drawing follows fixed rules rather than player decisions.
Card values
Aces count as 1. Cards from 2 to 9 use their face value. Tens and picture cards count as 0.
If a hand total reaches two digits, only the final digit is normally used. A total of 15 therefore becomes a baccarat value of 5.
Player and Banker are hand names
Player and Banker describe the two sides of the round. They do not mean that the customer physically controls the Player hand or that the casino is making strategic choices for Banker.
The wager simply selects which hand is expected to finish with the better qualifying total.
Tie bet
Tie is a separate wager that wins when the two hands finish with equal values. It has its own probability and payout and should be evaluated separately from Player and Banker.
Natural totals
When one or both starting hands reach certain high totals, the round can end immediately without further cards. The table rules determine the exact sequence.
Third-card rules
Players do not normally decide whether a third card is drawn. Standard baccarat uses fixed drawing rules for both Player and Banker.
That makes baccarat different from blackjack, where the player chooses actions such as hit or stand.
Banker bets and commission
Some baccarat tables apply a commission or adjusted payout to Banker wins. Other variants modify the payout structure in a different way.
Check the exact paytable before assuming every Banker bet is settled identically.
Punto Banco
Punto Banco is a common baccarat format in which the drawing rules are automatic and the customer chooses only the wager type and stake.
Live baccarat
Live baccarat uses a streamed dealer and physical cards or approved dealing equipment. Table limits, pace, language and side bets can vary between tables even when the core rules remain similar.
Digital baccarat
Digital baccarat runs the same general game logic in software. The interface, speed and optional features may differ from live play.
Side bets
Some tables offer additional wagers on specific combinations or outcomes. These have separate paytables and probabilities and should not be treated as part of the ordinary Player, Banker or Tie bet.
Table limits
Check the minimum and maximum stake for the table. Side bets may use separate limits.
Result roads and history
Baccarat interfaces often display previous outcomes in visual histories or roads. These can summarise what happened, but they do not automatically predict the next independent round.
Practical checklist
Before playing, check:
- Player payout
- Banker payout or commission
- Tie payout
- third-card rules
- table limits
- side bets
- live or digital format
- paytable
Conclusion
Baccarat is a rule-driven table game in which Player and Banker hands are compared and card drawing is handled automatically. The main differences between tables usually come from payout structure, commission, side bets and limits rather than from player decisions during the round.
